The Frontier Touring Company by arrangement with Premier Artists are delighted to announce that Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson will be touring Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra this August.

Riding high on the success of their ARIA #1 album collaboration Rattlin’ Bones (out now through Liberation), Kasey and Shane’s metro concerts will include new songs from this gorgeous album, as well as past hits from Kasey’s impressive multi-platinum back catalogue.

Joining Kasey and Shane on stage will be a full band comprised of Bill Chambers, John Watson, James Gillard, and Mark Collins. Fans will also be treated to a special acoustic segment during the evening.

Rattlin’ Bones has been unanimously declared one of the year’s best releases. Check out what some of the reviews have said:

“…this musical coupling is bottled lightning. The first inescapable revelation of their debut collaborative effort is how entrancing their voices are together…” Daily Telegraph, Sydney

“Some might have pondered if Chambers teaming with Nicholson in the studio was wise. Rattlin’ Bones blows any such doubts away.” Courier Mail, Brisbane

“…the songs are so strong, they sound like instant classics.” Rhythms Magazine

“…a deadset beaut bunch of traditional country tunes that are as honest as a boy scout and as open as a drunkard writing his resignation at 4am.” People Magazine

“Rattlin’ Bones could yet prove to be the year’s best album…an essential in your CD collection.” Sunday Herald Sun, Melbourne

«««««. Rattlin’ Bones is simply the best album of her and Nicholson’s careers and a roots album of global significance…Sublime.” The Australian

««««Rolling Stone, Australia

“…14 doses of premium-grade alt-country…” West Australian, Perth

“…destined to stand the test of time.” Beat Magazine, Melbourne

«««««MAG, Australia

“…a gutsy, warm, sometimes swinging, sometimes gloriously sad set of songs meant to be enjoyed.” Sydney Morning Herald

«««««MX Newspaper, Melbourne

“It’s hard not to be captivated by the two voices harmonising…” The Advocate, Tasmania

««««Rave Magazine, Brisbane

“…a rootsy and intimate breath of fresh air…” Who Weekly

“…their voices complement each other beautifully.” Time Out, Sydney

Those fortunate enough to have seen Kasey and Shane perform together in the past will be able to attest to the powerful rapport between the couple. Likewise as a solo performer Kasey shines as always with her impressive vocals and delivery. With a plethora of old and new hits to choose from, these concerts will have something for everyone.

Youth Group Release New Album and Announce Intimate Tour

Author: thekingsfool  //  Category: Music News and Tour Announcement Media Releases

Sydney four-piece Youth Group are set to release their fourth album ‘The Night Is Ours’ on June 28. The highly anticipated album follows on from their top ten ARIA-Award winning album ‘Casino Twilight Dogs’.

Recorded and produced by Tim Kevin and Anthony The and mixed by Tim Whitten (Augie March, Powderfinger, 78 Saab) and Youth Group’s good friend Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie), ‘The Night Is Ours’ saw Youth Group employ a less than traditional recording process.

Over a couple of months late last year, the band holed up in a near derelict 1920s mess hall on Sydney’s harbour to create the record. They turned a vacated building into a studio, and brought in all of their own gear to create an inimitable recording environment which allowed them to work at their own pace. The old dining room morphed into their ‘band room’ and the old bathroom became the ‘control room’. This unusual approach helped to shape the 10 songs that make up the personality of ‘The Night Is Ours.

The band recently launched the album to media with a brilliant showcase aboard the MV Cape Don, a boat moored on Sydney Harbour a short distance from where the album was recorded. Under a stormy sky, they left a lasting impression:

“Inspiring and memorable… Toby Martin is surely one of the best talents in this country” – Sun Herald

See them performing a set of songs from their new album in an intimate theatre setting;

The Vanguard, Sydney

July 30 &  31

Manchester Lane, Melbourne

August 2 & 3

Tickets on sale June 27, get in quick as these are very intimate shows and will sell out!

‘The Night Is Ours’ features the new single ‘Two Sides’, and will be released through Ivy League Records on June 28.

dmc World DJ Championship 2008

Author: thekingsfool  //  Category: Music News and Tour Announcement Media Releases, uncategorised

When most people think of world domination, they think of evil tyrants, tanks and years of oppression. Little do they know that such a recognised title can also be claimed within 6 minutes via two turntables, a mixer, a DJ and their brutish mixing power at the decks.

Every year the DMC World DJ Championships uncovers the nations best DJ to represent Australia and showcase their skills at the DMC World Finals. With the infamous gold plated Technics decks and mixer up for grabs and not to mention the world title, DJs across the globe are currently preparing themselves to do battle.

DMC first took turntablism from the underground battles of New York and gave DJs a purpose and something to strive for when they created the inaugural World DJ championships in 1986. Not only did the global competition help to cement Djing as a cornerstone of hip hop culture, it also helped raise the profile of the humble turntable as an instrument. In turn, due to the level of skill, flair, originality and discipline needed to operate such an instrument, they helped change the perception in the music industry that DJs are not simply mixtape makers but artists in their own right.

DJ Dexter one of Australia’s finest exports, enjoyed international success with The Avalanches after coming second to three times World Champion Craze in the 2000 World Final proving that the next World Champion could indeed come from any corner of the globe. A-Trak proved that age was no barrier when securing his world title at only 15 and now spends his time travelling the world with Kanye West.

If you think you have the nous, finesse and skill to battle your way through your state event, take out the national finals and represent Australia at the world champs, contact DMC Australia to get an application form by calling 03 9824 0944 or emailing stewart@dmcrecords.com.au

GOOD BUDDHA – MOVIN’ ON UP!

Author: thekingsfool  //  Category: Music News and Tour Announcement Media Releases
“These guys were the innovators of live funk-splashed hip hop in Oz’ – Border Mail

Throw away your rain coats and doonas! Good Buddha is getting set to warm up the east coast this winter with their blistering live show.

Straight off the back of their critically acclaimed new album ‘Hit the Sky Running’ the boys are inviting audiences to step away from the comfort of their stereos and feel the heat of their scintillating live show. Combining a 6 piece live band, a punchy sound system and plenty of dance floors to polish makes this an experience not to be missed.

With much of 2007 spent locked away in the studio, their new album was worth the wait. Combining a decade worth of party starting experience with classic hip hop production, funky organ riffs, African rhythms, reggae baselines and crafty street smart lyrics, the guys have delivered an album made for the stage.

Whether you have been converted though their performances at the Big Day Out, Good Vibes and Splendour in The Grass or stumbled across them whilst they supported hip hop legends Grandmaster Flash, Lyrics Born, People Under the Stairs, The Black Eyed Keys or The Herd; you would have witnessed the spell-binding affect Good Buddha has over any audience they perform for.

During July and August, Good Buddha will tour the east coast of Australia from the Sunshine Coast down to Tasmania stopping off to do ten high powered shows. With the album described as a ‘seamless mix of soul, reggae and funk fuelled hip hop’ (Triple J) Good Buddha are set to jump through the speakers in a city near you. Check out the dates below:

Red Bull Music Academy

Author: thekingsfool  //  Category: Music, Music News and Tour Announcement Media Releases, uncategorised

Established in 1998, the Red Bull Music Academy has emerged as the pre-eminent gathering of DJs and music producers in the world. A creative and cultural exchange of music ideas, the Academy teams established artists with the worlds best up and coming talent in two 12-day semesters of hands-on workshops and discussions about how life in the music industry really goes down.

In its 10 year history the Red Bull Music Academy has been held annually in some of the worlds most vibrant and musically savvy cities including; New York, Dublin, Melbourne, Rome, Seattle, San Paulo and most recently, Toronto. 2008 sees the Academy head to Barcelona, Spain, where world-class clubs pop ‘til dawn and the terms ‘fusion’ and ‘avant-garde’ are not buzz words but techniques to be applied to everything from deconstructed orchestras to art installations overflowing on street corners.

Covering all major aspects of DJ culture, including music history, technology, production and business skills, the Red Bull Music Academy invites a variety of accomplished international guests from around the world to share their knowledge and experience; everyone from industry movers and shakers, to pirate radio station operators, turntablists and sonic theorists. All are on hand to meet students and tell their own stories in their own words. Structured in two fortnightly terms, 60 music enthusiasts are flown in from around the world all expenses paid, to share, learn and have an absolute ball, all the while exploring and absorbing influence from the host city and its musical scenes.

Spanning the various sub-genres within dance, hip hop and everything in between including broken beats, garage, disco, house, drum ‘n bass, dub, reggae, electronica, funk-soul-jazz, and techno, there is something for every musical taste bud. Over the years the Academy has featured tutors of the highest musical calibre, including Jeff Mills, Adam Freeland, MJ Cole, Tiga, Craze, Grandwizard Theodore, Cut Chemist, J Majik, ?uestlove (The Roots), Derrick May, Michael Mayer, Norman Jay, Mark Rae (Rae & Christian), Killa Kela, J-Rocc, Peter Hook (New Order), Zinc, Recloose, Peanut Butter Wolf, X-Ecutioners, Biz Markie, Peshay, Tom Middleton, D-Bridge, Derrick Carter, Mike G (Jungle Brothers), M.I.A, Mad Professor, among many others.

For 2008, a prestigious line up of tutors has been selected, however in keeping with tradition; the identity of the lecturers will be kept under wraps until the Academy begins. One of the main purposes for this secrecy is so that the Academy attracts attendees with the right agenda and mind-set, not die-hard fans wanting to meet their idols.

To gain an insight into what a day at the Red Bull Music Academy might entail is to get a glimpse into a mind-altering musical world. Each day, students meet for breakfast and early morning catch-ups before heading off to check out which speaker will take their place on the Academy couch. There, armed with a mic, turntable, piece of hardware or perhaps just themselves, each lecturer shares with the students their years of musical experience, passing on invaluable know-how about the industry, technology and sharing how their dreams have pushed them forward to where they are now. From there, participants have the opportunity to involve themselves in all manner of collaborations with artists spanning the entire breadth of the musical sphere – purism goes out the door, it’s a musical free-for-all. At night, it’s time to hit the town, with students attending one another’s shows and forging unforgettable relationships.

A unique experience and one the Red Bull Music Academy hopes will last a life-time, the Academy has been set up first and foremost to provide attendees with an opportunity to broaden their musical horizons, gain knowledge into the industry and create invaluable networks with fellow artists across the globe. The philosophy is simple: the best of music, past & present, from around the world, under one roof, getting down just for the funk of it. The Academy isn’t a place to become an Idol-style overnight superstar and it’s not a guaranteed career maker either. Ultimately, it’s up to individuals to navigate their own path, but the Red Bull Music Academy could give you a major nudge in the right direction.

Bar McKinnon Interview

I love getting in first when it comes to doing interviews. I don’t mean by being the first to break a story but being first in line on a day where said interviewee is subjected to hours of often unwanted probing from intrusive, perceivably rude, supposed journalists.

I was lucky enough to be the first to speak to Clint ‘Bar’ (pronounced Bear, it’s German) McKinnon, by default that is, on such an occasion. “This is actually the first one, I missed one this morning, but I have another five lined up for this afternoon”, he tells me as I ask him if he is shit bored yet with answering questions, thinking jackpot as I gauge his response.

So I precede cautiously asking a safe question to keep the ball rolling, “Most people know you from playing in a band environment, so what can we expect from you by yourself?”

“You can expect me shitting myself on stage and maybe having a stuttering fit,” he admits foxingly, as if he is joking yet showing he is deadly serious. Nerves, we all have them, some show it more and for that matter handle them better than others. Bar tells me from the get go that he is nervous about embarking on a solo trek across oz, yet this is the only moment throughout our 30 min conversation that he lets on his anxiety, brooding confidence as words flooded from his mouth, about everything that I dared ask as our conversation covered numerous surprising things.

Sure Bar has been a member of Mr Bungle for the last 15 years, but this interview was supposed to be about him and his tour. I didn’t want to introduce the inevitable subject of ‘the band’. I guess I didn’t want to seem rude talking about something else other than what the subject was supposed to be about, Bar’s tour. But the more I think about it Mr Bungle is at the centre of Bars trek in that he is proclaiming that he hasn’t given up and put his musical life on hold just because other people within the band environment have decided to place it on an indefinite holding period.

Ah I don’t know it’s hard to say. I’m still sort of working it out,” he continues. “But it’s almost going to be me doing karaoke to my own little recordings. Hopefully it all goes well. It’s just going to be me playing a little bit of sax, a little bit of flute, and singing and playing guitar and playing keyboards along to a minidisc, in a large part, so it’s going to be a little bit funky but hopefully it all works out.”

“You’re one of those buggers that everyone hates, you can play every bloody thing.” I joke to him, as he gets through his never ending list of instruments. “I can sort of fake it on everything,” he quickly professes, “That’s just a result of being spread thin over the years by Bungle, you know. I never played flute until they asked me too and stuff like that, but that was good and it’s gotten me to be a more rounded musician I think.”

There is no solo album for Bar to actually promote with this tour so I was curious as to what he would actually be playing when he comes to town, “ I am going to be doing some stuff I wrote when I was 17 and then I’m going to being doing some more recent stuff that I have done that hasn’t been put to CD and released or anything. I was sort of realising that I am doing everything backwards. You know instead of getting a CD recorded and then going and shopping it around and promoting it. I’m sort of taking it straight from the bedroom and just throwing it on stage and letting it go from there. Ultimately what I want to do is get a band together to play my music make it more of an organic experience for people and of course to get other people involved and bounce ideas off.”

“I am just trying to keep things going and get stuff out there as well. Cause I know that people are really curious and are wondering what’s going on with Bungle and I figure this is something that I can do for them. I know it’s short of waiting the next year and a half for the next Bungle album or waiting forever for an album that’s never going to come. I figure that I let people know that I have been sitting here for the last three years doing day care with the kids essentially. I am just as antsy as anybody else you know, as (much as) any other diehard fan is to hear new stuff. So I figure this is a little something that I can do to let people know that I am still in there writing stuff, that I am still being creative. At the same time though it’s a selfish thing for me to get out there in front of an audience and see how things go. Before I go ‘ah fuck it’ and sweep it under a rug and it’s forgotten forever.”

You may be wondering why then would Bar choose Australia to do a solo tour when he is from the States. It turns out that he is now based in Melbourne with his Australian wife and their two children. “We’re here to be near grandma and grandpa and free baby sitting, at the moment,” he jokes, before continuing, “All my friends are in other cities or overseas. With Bungle the most I have heard from Patton is an email a month ago saying that he is booked out for 2003. Fair enough the guy is always booked out, but I continue to send him my ideas, some of which you may hear on this little tour, and I continue to send them tapes with the slim hope that one day Bungle will do something again. I’m not going to sit there and go ‘Ah fuck it’ (he mockingly sulks), since I haven’t heard from them. I am going to continue to send them tapes and go ‘I have ideas’. Basically I’m like everyone else out there that’s going ‘When? When is something else going to come out and what are they doing?’ I’m just as frustrated as anybody else out there, because I know what amazing things can happen with the group, so for my part I am continuing to compose and send them my ideas. I’m not giving up hope from my side of things, even though I know Mike said in an interview relatively recently that “as far as he was concerned Bungle’s over,” but I don’t know if he was just sending up some sort of test balloon to sort of shake Trey out of his mountain top studio and wake (him) up and get in touch with him. Cause Mike and Trey have sort of a silence grudge match going with one another. I’ve said it to people a million times that in the larger scheme of things I realise they don’t need each other to do what they need to do creatively, but when they can get together they are like an unstoppable force. I wouldn’t say they are a Lennon and McCartney by any means as far as song writing goes, but there is something incredible that can happen. I feel that there is so much music with the band that has yet to be done. It’s like only three albums and Jesus Christ like four to five years between each one of them. It’s just a joke! I would love it if we could just put anything out, cause there is so many things that we have recorded that are finished that have been mastered that are just sitting there, and it’s just like well fucking release them if we are not going to do anything in the near future just release it. But people are sticklers and they just don’t want stuff to get out there that isn’t polished to just so… and whatever. But I’m like ‘God the name of the band is Mr Bungle, lets fucking put something out there, it’s like big deal. People are there and they’re curious and they’re waiting and I squirm for them, to the extent of it’s like ‘fucking hell’. But at this stage it’s up to Trey and Mike to bury the hatchet and find some time in the schedule that we can reconvene, Cause until I hear someone say ‘Bar it’s fucking over man, stop calling, stop sending tapes’, I’m not going to give up.”

This was truly one of the most interesting and memorable interviews that I have ever done and I can’t wait for Bar’s show at the Northern Star Hotel on July 27th supported by Melbourne D.J magician Dr EL Suavo. And as his press release says, “Don’t be a schmuck, make sure you are present at this groundbreaking event. What will you tell your grandchildren if you don’t make it?”
