Particle physicists believe they will throw open a new frontier of knowledge on Wednesday when, 100 metres below ground, they switch on a mega-machine crafted to unveil the deepest mysteries of matter.
The most complex scientific experiment ever undertaken, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will accelerate sub-atomic particles to nearly the speed of light and then smash them together, with the aim of filling gaps in our understanding of the cosmos.
It may also determine the outcome of novel theories about space-time: does another dimension - or dimensions - exist in parallel to our own?
After nearly two decades and 6 billion Swiss francs ($A6.6 billion), an army of 5,000 scientists, engineers and technicians drawn from nearly three dozen countries have brought the mammoth project close to fruition.
At 9.30am (1730 AEST) on Wednesday, the first protons will be injected into a 27-kilometre ring-shaped tunnel, straddling the Swiss-French border at the headquarters of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN).
Whizzed to within a millionth of a per cent of the speed of the light, the particles will be the first step in a long-term experiment to smash sub-atomic components together, briefly generating temperatures 100,000 times hotter than the Sun in a microscopic space.
Analysts will then pore over the wreckage in the search for fundamental particles.
“We will be entering into a new territory of physics,” said Peter Jenni, spokesman for ATLAS - one of four gargantuan laboratories installed on the ring where a swathe of delicate detectors will spot the collisions.
“Wednesday is a very major milestone.”
The LHC is massively-muscled machine compared to its CERN predecessor, the Large Electron-Positron (LEP) collider, and an ageing accelerator at the legendary Fermilab in Illinois.
It has the power to smash protons or ions - particles known as hadrons - together at a whopping 14 teraelectron volts (TeV), seven times the record held by Fermilab’s Tevatron.
The leviathan scale of the project is neatly juxtaposed by its goal, which is to explore the infinitely small.
Physicists have long puzzled over how particles acquire mass.
In 1964, a British physicist, Peter Higgs, came up with this idea: there must exist a background field that would act rather like treacle.
Particles passing through it would acquire mass by being dragged through a mediator, which theoreticians dubbed the Higgs Boson.
The standard quip about the Higgs is that it is the “God Particle” - it is everywhere but remains frustratingly elusive.
French physicist Yves Sacquin says that heroic work by the LEP and Fermilab has narrowed down the energy range at which the devious critter is likely to spotted.
Given the LHC’s capabilities, “there’s a very strong probability that it will be detected,” he said.
Some experts are also hopeful about an early LHC breakthrough on the question of supersymmetry.
The supersymmetry theory goes way beyond even the Higgs. It postulates that particles in the Standard Model have related, but more massive, counterparts.
Such particles could explain the unsettling discovery of recent years that visible matter only accounts for some four per cent of the Universe. Enigmatic phenomena called dark matter and dark energy account for the rest.
CERN Director General Robert Aymar is confident the massive experiment will yield a correspondingly big breakthrough in penetrating these mysteries.
“It is certain that the LHC will yield the identity and understanding of this dark matter,” he said in a video statement.
CERN has had to launch a PR campaign aimed at reassuring the public that the LHC will not create black holes that could engulf the planet or an unpleasant hypothetical particle called a strangelet that would turn the Earth into a lump of goo.
It has commissioned a panel to verify its calculations that such risks are, by any reasonable thinking, impossible, and France too has carried out its own safety probe.
Either way, the end of the world will not happen on Wednesday, for the simple reason that the LHC will not generate any collisions that day.
These will probably be initiated “in a few weeks” as part of a phased programme to commission the LHC, testing its equipment and evaluating work procedures before cranking it up to full strength, said Jenni.
Looking at the daily mountain of data that will have to be analysed, “it will take weeks or months before one can really hope to start discovering something new,” he cautioned.
“The LHC is more than a machine. It is the intellectual quest of our age,” the British weekly New Scientist said in this week’s issue.
“With luck… today’s physics textbooks will start to look out of date by the end of 2009.”

The Aboriginal People of Australia
For the aboriginal people… of Australia, the earth… was not thought
of… as a body… so much as a melody… a song… representing a map
of directions. But as Bruce Chatwin, wrote in his book, “The
Songlines”, it is interesting… to remember… that the name for
our universe means, literally, “one-verse”, perhaps ours… is but
one section… of a larger song… spanning many “universes,”
which together… form a complete song.
Aboriginal creation myths… tell that the Ancestors… climbed up
out of the land… and began to walk around the country. Every
time… they spotted a rock, an animal, a stream or a plant, they
would call out its name… in the form of a song. In essence,
they were singing… these items… into existence… by naming them.
Whatever they saw… and did… was recorded in song, and these
songs… were ’stored’ in the countryside… over which… they traveled.
“Wherever their tracks led,” Chatwin writes, “they left a trail…
of music.”
The Ancestors’ songs… lay themselves down… into the ground.. in
couplets, with one half… on one side… of the track, and the other
half… on the other side. With these couplets… the Ancestor… stored
his “life-cells” or “spirit-children,” and it was said… that when a
pregnant woman… walked over… one of these couplets, it traveled…
up into her body… and impregnated… the fetus… with song.
Every aspect… of the Australian land… was charged… with these
ancient songs, and the paths… upon which… the Ancients trod…
were special track ways. The aborigines… referred to these
roads… as “Footprints of the Ancestors” or “Way of the law,”
but the Europeans… called them “Dreaming tracks” or “Song lines.”
The aboriginal conception… of land… is of a free and open place,
something which cannot be hemmed in… with fences and titles
of ownership. Rather, the country… is an interlocking network…
of “ways through.” All their words for “country” are the same…
as their words for “line.”
Traveling of the song lines… was called “Walkabout.” The
Walkabout… was a very spiritual experience, though the paths…
had both psychic and physical purposes… for the aborigines.
To them, settling in one place… meant death, and travel was
necessary… for survival. The song line was, in a sense, a
path… back to the Ancestors… themselves.
Chatwin argues that, since the aborigines… probably migrated…
to Australia… from other lands… back when all the continents…
were joined, that the idea… of the Song lines… probably extends,
into other countries. “I felt the Song lines… were not necessarily
an Australian phenomenon, but universal: that they were the
means… by which… man.. marked out his territory, and so
organized.. his social life.” Such tracks… must exist… the world
over, he thought… not just in the outback.
The aboriginal elders… of the North Coast Bundjalung tribe… give
us the history… of the coming seven tribes… in ancient days…
who came… from a destroyed homeland… in the heavens. These
people… built a system of pyramids, containing giant crystals…. That
encircled the world… to create a nourishing and protective energy
field. Bundjalung elders… even refer to a large pyramid… hidden
in the rainforest… of northern New South Wales.

CANBERRA - The United States planned to gas Australian troops in experiments with two of the most lethal nerve gases ever devised, newly declassified files have revealed.
Previously top secret documents have shown that even as the world was outlawing chemical weapons at the height of the Cold War, Washington sought Canberra’s permission to test sarin and VX gas on diggers in remote Queensland.
The documents, shown on Channel Nine’s Sunday programme yesterday, indicate that US military scientists wanted to bomb and spray 200 “mainly Australian” troops with the deadly nerve agents in the 1960s.
Shaken by the request, the plan was rejected by Liberal Prime Minister Harold Holt, despite Canberra’s deep concern to keep the US engaged in the western Pacific.
At the time the two nations were embroiled in Vietnam and in contingency plans for war against China drawn up by the former Southeast Asia Treaty Organisation.
Sarin and VX gas are now classified as weapons of mass destruction and are outlawed under the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention.
First produced by Nazi Germany but not used in World War II, Sarin is fatal at even very low concentrations, killing within minutes.
Produced by both the US and the former Soviet Union, the gas was adopted as a standard chemical weapon in Europe by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation but was later dumped from Western arsenals.
But Sarin was used by Iraq during its eight-year war with Iran in the 1980s, and was used by late dictator Saddam Hussein in an attack against the Kurdish city of Halabja, killing an estimated 5000 people.
The other nerve gas named in the US proposals for Australian tests, VX, is regarded as the most toxic nerve agent ever produced, and was manufactured in large volumes by America during the early 1960s.
Channel Nine reported that Washington had asked Holt to allow testing of the two gases against Australian troops, probably in the Iron Range rainforest near Lockhart River in far north Queensland.
It said planning was very advanced in the US, which wanted the operation to be kept secret because the weapons were illegal under international law.
Survey teams inspected the proposed testing site, and details of the tests were to be kept secret from all but a handful of troops.
Peter Bailey, a former senior adviser to Holt, told the programme that the request alarmed Canberra. “If they weren’t pretty good and pretty faithful to the Americans we would be dumped, so I think ministers were very aware that this was probably our one main support,” he said.
Former Democrats Senator Lyn Allison told Channel Nine the present Labor Government should make the documents public.
And toxicology Professor Chris Winder of the University of New South Wales said the idea that Australia could even countenance such tests was unacceptable. He said Cold War fears that Chinese or Russian attackers might have used such weapons in a third world war “doesn’t justify it now and I don’t think it justified it then”.
