dmc World DJ Championship 2008

When most people think of world domination, they think of evil tyrants, tanks and years of oppression. Little do they know that such a recognised title can also be claimed within 6 minutes via two turntables, a mixer, a DJ and their brutish mixing power at the decks.

Every year the DMC World DJ Championships uncovers the nations best DJ to represent Australia and showcase their skills at the DMC World Finals. With the infamous gold plated Technics decks and mixer up for grabs and not to mention the world title, DJs across the globe are currently preparing themselves to do battle.

DMC first took turntablism from the underground battles of New York and gave DJs a purpose and something to strive for when they created the inaugural World DJ championships in 1986. Not only did the global competition help to cement Djing as a cornerstone of hip hop culture, it also helped raise the profile of the humble turntable as an instrument. In turn, due to the level of skill, flair, originality and discipline needed to operate such an instrument, they helped change the perception in the music industry that DJs are not simply mixtape makers but artists in their own right.

DJ Dexter one of Australia’s finest exports, enjoyed international success with The Avalanches after coming second to three times World Champion Craze in the 2000 World Final proving that the next World Champion could indeed come from any corner of the globe. A-Trak proved that age was no barrier when securing his world title at only 15 and now spends his time travelling the world with Kanye West.

If you think you have the nous, finesse and skill to battle your way through your state event, take out the national finals and represent Australia at the world champs, contact DMC Australia to get an application form by calling 03 9824 0944 or emailing stewart@dmcrecords.com.au

Red Bull Music Academy

Established in 1998, the Red Bull Music Academy has emerged as the pre-eminent gathering of DJs and music producers in the world. A creative and cultural exchange of music ideas, the Academy teams established artists with the worlds best up and coming talent in two 12-day semesters of hands-on workshops and discussions about how life in the music industry really goes down.

In its 10 year history the Red Bull Music Academy has been held annually in some of the worlds most vibrant and musically savvy cities including; New York, Dublin, Melbourne, Rome, Seattle, San Paulo and most recently, Toronto. 2008 sees the Academy head to Barcelona, Spain, where world-class clubs pop ‘til dawn and the terms ‘fusion’ and ‘avant-garde’ are not buzz words but techniques to be applied to everything from deconstructed orchestras to art installations overflowing on street corners.

Covering all major aspects of DJ culture, including music history, technology, production and business skills, the Red Bull Music Academy invites a variety of accomplished international guests from around the world to share their knowledge and experience; everyone from industry movers and shakers, to pirate radio station operators, turntablists and sonic theorists. All are on hand to meet students and tell their own stories in their own words. Structured in two fortnightly terms, 60 music enthusiasts are flown in from around the world all expenses paid, to share, learn and have an absolute ball, all the while exploring and absorbing influence from the host city and its musical scenes.

Spanning the various sub-genres within dance, hip hop and everything in between including broken beats, garage, disco, house, drum ‘n bass, dub, reggae, electronica, funk-soul-jazz, and techno, there is something for every musical taste bud. Over the years the Academy has featured tutors of the highest musical calibre, including Jeff Mills, Adam Freeland, MJ Cole, Tiga, Craze, Grandwizard Theodore, Cut Chemist, J Majik, ?uestlove (The Roots), Derrick May, Michael Mayer, Norman Jay, Mark Rae (Rae & Christian), Killa Kela, J-Rocc, Peter Hook (New Order), Zinc, Recloose, Peanut Butter Wolf, X-Ecutioners, Biz Markie, Peshay, Tom Middleton, D-Bridge, Derrick Carter, Mike G (Jungle Brothers), M.I.A, Mad Professor, among many others.

For 2008, a prestigious line up of tutors has been selected, however in keeping with tradition; the identity of the lecturers will be kept under wraps until the Academy begins. One of the main purposes for this secrecy is so that the Academy attracts attendees with the right agenda and mind-set, not die-hard fans wanting to meet their idols.

To gain an insight into what a day at the Red Bull Music Academy might entail is to get a glimpse into a mind-altering musical world. Each day, students meet for breakfast and early morning catch-ups before heading off to check out which speaker will take their place on the Academy couch. There, armed with a mic, turntable, piece of hardware or perhaps just themselves, each lecturer shares with the students their years of musical experience, passing on invaluable know-how about the industry, technology and sharing how their dreams have pushed them forward to where they are now. From there, participants have the opportunity to involve themselves in all manner of collaborations with artists spanning the entire breadth of the musical sphere – purism goes out the door, it’s a musical free-for-all. At night, it’s time to hit the town, with students attending one another’s shows and forging unforgettable relationships.

A unique experience and one the Red Bull Music Academy hopes will last a life-time, the Academy has been set up first and foremost to provide attendees with an opportunity to broaden their musical horizons, gain knowledge into the industry and create invaluable networks with fellow artists across the globe. The philosophy is simple: the best of music, past & present, from around the world, under one roof, getting down just for the funk of it. The Academy isn’t a place to become an Idol-style overnight superstar and it’s not a guaranteed career maker either. Ultimately, it’s up to individuals to navigate their own path, but the Red Bull Music Academy could give you a major nudge in the right direction.

The Kings Fool Bio

Author: thekingsfool  //  Category: Biography, uncategorised

Everything happens for a reason. Everyone that crosses our paths is on the same spiritual journey that we are. It is up to us to identify what it is that we are supposed to take away from each encounter.

I am particularly interested in the nature of what we call reality, the etherical universe. I have dedicated my music, and thus life, to breaking down the bonds of social conditioning that make us fear our fellow man, such as religion, privitisation, corrupt and centralised government, fear of speaking out and censorship, as well as exposing the Illuminati’s New World Order agenda. Not one to just point out the problems, rather trying to offer alternative points of view and solutions to ideologies and polices that dehumanise us every day.

History judges all, just make sure you win so you can write it!

The Kings Fool is the musical vessel of journalist Kieran Wicks. Wicksy has been active in the print and broadcast media, both locally and nationally for nearly 10 years. He has worked with Triple J and the Austereo Network, cutting his teeth in community radio, creating documentaries and helping concieve and run award winning street press publications including U-Turn and Reverb.
